Under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the IRS notifies the State Department if a taxpayer owes a delinquent tax debt of $52,000 or more. The law then requires the State Department to deny a passport application or renewal or revoke a current passport. If a taxpayer has imminent travel plans contacting the IRS can help resolve these issues and expedite reversal. The taxpayer would need to inform the IRS they have travel scheduled within 45 days or they live abroad.
